April Pre-Code Film Series Kicks Off Thursday, April 2nd at 6 PM with Double Feature

mtbrhwAlbright Memorial Library will be kicking off its Pre-Code Classic Film Series on Thursday, April 2nd at 6 PM with a hilarious comedy double feature.

The risque 1933 comedy Meet the Baron, starring Jack Pearl and Jimmy Durante, will screen at 6 PM.  In Meet the Baron, a couple of bungling idiots (Jimmy Durante and Jack Pearl) are abandoned in the deep jungles of Africa by Baron Munchhausen. When a rescue team searching for the lost Baron stumble across the pair, they mistake Pearl for the missing Baron, and take the two of them back to America–where they receive a hero’s welcome and cause havoc of epic proportions.  Meet the Baron also features a rare Pre-Code appearance by The Three Stooges (billed here as Ted Healy and His Stooges) as three crazy janitors.

Following Meet the Baron, the 1932 legendary comedy Red-Headed Woman starring Jean Harlow will screen at 7:15 PM.  In Red-Headed Woman, an ambitious and sexy young secretary attempts to sleep her way into high society, starting with her married boss (Chester Morris).

Early birds will be treated to It’s the Easter Beagle, Charlie Brown at 5:30 PM.

The Classic Pre-Code film series is being sponsored by The Friends of Scranton Public Library, who are also generously providing refreshments.

All screenings in the Pre-Code Classic Film Series are free with your library card, but seating is limited and registration is strongly suggested.

For more information, or to register, please contact Bill at (570) 348-3000, x3008 or email bcronauer@albright.org; you may also click here to register online.

The Pre-Code Classic film series will continue throughout April on Thursdays at 7 PM (with the exception of the April 9th screening of Madam Satan at 6:30 PM) in the Community Room (basement of Lackawanna County Children’s Library).

Temporary Inconvenience; Permanent Improvement

Catalog Will Be Unavailable March 23 to 25

Library patrons will be unable to access the catalog for three days before the March 26 launch of a new, improved version.

Library staff will be available in person, online, and by phone to assist with searching needs during the shutdown.

The Library System’s IT Department is preparing for the change from the existing SirsiDynix System to one powered by SPARK. It was developed by Pennsylvania libraries as a collaborative, statewide integrated catalog for public, school and special libraries.

Regular catalog users will notice little change in what they need to do to find a book, DVD, CD, or audiobook, other than having the option to create their own customized user name and password. This feature will be particularly appreciated by mobile device users since it will be easier than entering the 14 digit library card number followed by a four digit PIN currently required.

Easier browsing and searching will also be noticeable, as will book suggestions, and a history of books and other material checked out over time. Users will also be able to create customized lists of books they want to read, movies they wish to see, or CDs by their favorite recording artists.

Beginning Thursday, April 2nd, Albright Memorial Library will be presenting a weekly classic film series dedicated to classic movies of the Pre-Code era.  This series of six classic films — starring legendary actors such as Jean Harlow, Myrna Loy, James Cagney, Joan Blondell, Paul Muni, and The Three Stooges in some of their greatest and most controversial films of their careers — will be shown in the Community Room, located in the basement of the Lackawanna County Children’s Library.

In 1930, Hollywood adopted a Production Code to self-regulate the contents of its films; HOWEVER, it wasn’t fully enforced until 1934.  These four years produced some of the most shocking and provocative films ever made — murderers went free, adultery was flaunted, promiscuity was celebrated, and guilt was frivolous.  This library film series celebrates some of the best movies of the Pre-Code era.

Thursday, April 2nd at 6 PM (SPECIAL TIME)MEET THE BARON (1933) starring Jack Pearl, Jimmy Durante and The Three Stooges, followed by RED-HEADED WOMAN (1932) starring Jean Harlow at 7:15 PM

Thursday, April 9th at 6:30 PM (SPECIAL TIME)MADAM SATAN (1930) directed by Cecil B. DeMille

Thursday, April 23rd at 7 PMI AM A FUGITIVE FROM A CHAIN GANG (1932) starring Paul Muni

The Classic Pre-Code film series is being sponsored by The Friends of Scranton Public Library, who are also generously providing refreshments.

All films are free with your Lackawanna County Library Card; however, seating is limited and registration is strongly suggested.

You may register online to attend any film in the series by clicking here or by clicking any of the film titles listed above.

February Is Donation Drive for Griffin Pond Animal Shelter

Scranton Public Library is having a donation drive for the Griffin Pond Animal Shelter throughout the month of February.

The library is collecting a variety of items—blankets, dry and canned food for dogs/puppies and cats/kitties, treats, guinea pig food, rabbit food, toys, bleach, paper towels and any other items– that an animal shelter needs to keep it up and running.

All donations will be greatly appreciated, not only by the shelter, but by the animals too.

You can drop off your donations in the plastic bin on the main floor of Scranton Public Library.
