Film Forward at the Albright Memorial Library

Film Forward wraps up this week with our final four films.  Free screenings and discussions of the thought-provoking films are scheduled as follows:

VAlentineValentine Road on Monday, April 21st at 7 pm, moderated by Dr. John McNerney

On February 12, 2008, eighth-grade student Brandon McInerney shot his classmate Larry King twice in the back of the head. With keen insight, the film connects the human wreckage of Larry’s and Brandon’s troubled lives—both bullied and both searching for a sense of belonging.   U.S. Documentary 88 minutes

TheRocketThe Rocket on Tuesday, April 22nd at 7 pm, moderated by Mr. Kevin Norris

A boy who is believed to bring bad luck leads his family and a couple of ragged misfits through Laos to find a new home. After a calamity-filled journey through a land scarred by war, the boy sets off to prove he’s not cursed and builds a giant rocket to enter the most lucrative but dangerous competition of the year: the Rocket Festival. International Narrative 92 minutes

Five people are affected by a tragic heroic act. Twenty years later, all of them will have to confront the past through their own crises. Will they over come the guilt, frustration, and the urge for revenge? Will they do the right thing, at all costs? International Narrative 112 minutes

DancingDancing in Jaffa on Thursday, April 24th at 7 pm, moderated by Ms. Alicia Grega

Renowned ballroom dancer, Pierre Dulaine, takes his belief that dance can overcome political and cultural differences and apples it to 11-year-old Jewish and Palestinian Israelis. What occurs is magical and transformative. International Documentary 89 minutes

All screenings will be held in the library’s Community Room, located in the basement of the Lackawanna County Children’s Library at 520 Vine Street, Scranton. There is no charge and the public is encouraged to attend.

 FILM FORWARD is an international program designed to enhance greater cultural understanding, collaboration and dialogue around the globe by engaging audiences through the exhibition of films, workshops and conversations.  An initiative of the Sundance Institute and the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities – in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Institute of Museum and Library Services, FILM FORWARD promotes cultural dialogue through independent documentary and narrative film, using film’s unique ability to tell stories that explore universal themes to ignite meaningful conversations.

Worm Composting

Monday, May 12th at 7 pm.

Join Laureen Maloney to explore the hows and whys of worm composting at home.  Make and take a seed starter for your garden!  Bring an empty egg carton to carry home your seed starters.

Meet three local authors and poets as they share their publishing experiences.  Learn tips and suggestions on how to publish your work.

‘Film Forward’ Film Series Coming to Scranton Library

The Scranton Public Library is pleased to announce its selection as a screening site for the prestigious “FILM FORWARD: ADVANCING CULTURAL DIALOGUE” film series.  FILM FORWARD is an international program designed to enhance greater cultural understanding, collaboration and dialogue around the globe by engaging audiences through the exhibition of films, workshops and conversations.  An initiative of the Sundance Institute and the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities – in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Institute of Museum and Library Services, FILM FORWARD promotes cultural dialogue through independent documentary and narrative film, using film’s unique ability to tell stories that explore universal themes to ignite meaningful conversations.

Maker Mondays Celebrate National Poetry Month

April is National Poetry Month and we will be celebrating with two writing centered Maker Mondays.

Zine History and Creation Workshop with Jessica Meoni on Monday, April 7th at 7 pm.
Zines, stemming from “fanzines” of the early 1960s, have spanned generations in the underground literature, art, and music scenes in various areas of the world. Essentially a handmade magazine, discover the history and future of these publications and learn how to create one yourself with some basic supplies. Come with an idea you’d like to write about – music, travels, recipes, relationships, social issues – anything works!
